20 Millions Trees and counting

Significant tree plantings took place across the Mulloon Catchment last year to help create vegetation corridors along several creeks in the region. The plantings included a diverse range of native trees and shrubs and will continue this coming spring.

Some of these corridors are being used to connect the valley floor to the woodland covered ridges. In other places, tree belts have been strategically placed to provide wind protection on exposed slopes and give shelter to stock.

Various landholders from the catchment have been taking part in the project and their cooperation and support is invaluable to its success.

Thanks also the Australian Government for support via their 20 Million Trees program and various Green Army participants.

Alex Lynch overlooks the first stage of what will become a 1.6km long riparian corridor on Emu Flats Creek at ‘Seafield’ which he owns jointly with his brother Ben. The diverse range of native trees and shrubs will nicely complement the range of aquatic species that have established thanks to the Lynch’s fencing efforts. A tributary to Emu Flats Creek has also been planted, the first stage indicated by the pink guards in the background. In combination with spring plantings on the upstream property Birkenburn, this will create a further 1.6 km of riparian corridor, connecting the valley floor to the woodland covered ridges of the Sandhills above.

This planting of diverse native trees capitalises on the moisture infiltrated by contours on Mulloon Farm, a property owned by the Carrols and managed by Nick Huggins. The tree belts are well oriented to provide wind protection to the exposed west facing slopes, improving microclimate and shelter for stock.
